DENVER—Denver firefighters estimated they helped about 20 people, including several drivers, stuck in quickly rising water as heavy rain fell Friday night.

Three people were rescued after Cherry Creek flooded a bike path downtown, Denver Fire spokesman Phil Champagne said. Rescuers floated with the victims down the creek to a bridge to get out of the water.

Champagne said firefighters also helped numerous drivers stranded in water as deep as 4 feet in some places.

The National Weather Service said up to 1.4 inches of rain fell within about 40 minutes Friday night on parts of southeast Denver and southwest Aurora. It issued a flash flood warning for western Arapahoe County, southern Denver and also west central Morgan County in eastern Colorado and southwest Mesa County in western Colorado.

Standing water closed the right three lanes of both directions of Interstate 25 at Alameda Avenue.

Firefighters also received calls of near drownings, a lightning strike on a house and flooded basements but had no reports of deaths.

The storm also caused a delay during the Colorado Rockies-San Diego Padres baseball game.
