COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Police say an Army private who told investigators his 7-month-old child was kidnapped by a babysitter for ransom is now under investigation on suspicion of child abuse.

Colorado Springs police said Friday the child was taken to a hospital suffering from severe malnutrition and viral infection after the father, David Spicer, reported the alleged kidnapping on July 24.

Investigators say the babysitter Spicer accused does not exist.

The case has been referred to the Army’s Criminal Investigations Division at Fort Carson, where Spicer lives.

Army officials declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation.

Spicer didn’t immediately respond to a message left with Fort Carson officials. It’s unknown whether he has an attorney.
