Members of Communications Workers of America District 7 voted to authorize a strike against Qwest if negotiations fail to produce a new contract, union officials said tonight.

The CWA said 93 percent of the approximate 14,000 members who voted over the past three weeks approved the measure that would allow union leaders to call a strike. About 18,900 Qwest workers are CWA members.

Contract negotiations on wages, health-care benefits and job outsourcing have been taking place since July 8. The existing contract expires Aug. 16.
