Whether he elected to roll the dice or simply didn’t believe he’d get a northern pike this late in the season, the outcome was the same. When a 20-plus-pound pike grabbed Michael Barton’s Tasmanian Devil lure at Williams Fork Reservoir on July 21, he was left to wrestle the sharp- toothed predator without benefit of a steel leader.

Much to his surprise and relief, Barton managed not to get sawed off during the entirety of a half-hour battle. The fish measured 43 1/2 inches long.
