Duke star Amanda Blumenherst won the U.S. Women’s Amateur on Sunday, rallying to beat NCAA champion Azahara Muñoz 2 and 1 in the 36-hole final.
Blumenherst, a three-time national college player of the year, was 1-down after the morning 18 and still a hole behind through 27 holes.
She squared it with a birdie on the par-4 10th, took the lead with a par on the par-5 13th and pulled two holes in front with a birdie on the par-5 16th. Both players parred the 17th to end the match.
• Amy Yang of South Korea spoiled Annika Sorenstam’s finale on home turf, tying the course record with a 9-under-par 63 for a six-shot victory at the Scandinavian TPC in Stockholm, Sweden.
Sorenstam eagled the par-4 17th to move into second place. The Swedish Hall of Famer made a double bogey on the last hole to shoot a 72 and finish seven strokes back in a tie for sixth.
Argentine knocks off Roddick
Lanky teenager Juan Martin del Potro rolled to a 6-1, 7-6 (2) victory over Andy Roddick in the Countrywide Classic final to win his third championship in less than a month.
Running his match victory string to 14 in a row, the 19-year-old Argentine broke Roddick’s serve three times in the first set and did not allow a break in the match.
The victory over the 25-year-old Roddick, the former world No. 1 who is ranked ninth, was the biggest so far for del Potro, who has moved up to No. 24 and will vault into the top 20.
Schumacher wins again
Tony Schumacher raced to his fourth straight victory and ninth of the season, winning the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals to move within two of Joe Amato’s top fuel win record of 52.
Schumacher powered his dragster to a performance of 3.865 seconds at 310.05 mph to outrun Cory McClenathan (3.900 at 306.74) in the final round at Brainerd International Raceway. Schumacher has three wins at the Minnesota dragstrip in his career.
Tony Pedregon (funny car), Kurt Johnson (pro stock) and Matt Smith (pro stock bike) also won their divisions.
UCLA’s Olson sidelined
UCLA quarterback Ben Olson broke his foot and will be sidelined at least two months.
Olson, whose career has been marked by injuries, broke the fifth metatarsal in his right foot during practice Saturday, and X-rays taken Sunday revealed the fracture. He suffered the same injury during spring practice.
A decision on whether he will have surgery is expected to be made in a few days.
Angel helps Red Bulls roll
Juan Pablo Angel scored two goals to lead the New York Red Bulls to a 4-1 victory over D.C. United.
Sinisa Ubiparipovic added the first MLS goal of his career and Mike Magee also scored for the Red Bulls, who snapped a five- game winless streak.
Jaime Moreno scored for D.C. United.
