MEXICO CITY — Hurricane Hernan weakened to Category 1 strength on Sunday as it lumbered over cooler waters far from land, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

Hernan had sustained winds near 85 mph (140 kph), down from almost 120 mph ( a day earlier when it was a major, Category 3 hurricane, the center reported. Forecasters said the fifth hurricane of the season posed no threat to land.

The storm was located far off Mexico’s western coast, about 1,185 miles west-southwest of the tip of the Baja California peninsula, and was moving on a northwest course farther out to sea, the center added.

Further weakening was expected, forecasters said, adding Hernan could drop below hurricane strength later Sunday or early Monday.

Storms are classified as hurricanes with winds of 74 mph or more.
