SEATTLE — The surprising run of the AL East-leading Rays took a hit Sunday when the club placed outfielder Carl Crawford on the 15-day disabled list with a hand injury.

Crawford injured a tendon in his right middle finger making a check swing in Saturday night’s 11-inning win over the Mariners.

Crawford was hitting .273 with eight homers, 57 RBIs and 25 stolen bases. Crawford had hit in his past 11 games, batting .349 during the streak.

The White Sox placed right-hander Jose Contreras on the 15-day DL with a ruptured left Achilles tendon, a season-ending injury.

The team also recalled right-hander Lance Broadway from Triple-A Charlotte, optioned lefty Boone Logan and purchased infielder Chris Getz’s contract from the minor-league club.

• The Yankees sent starting pitcher Ian Kennedy to Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre and recalled reliever Billy Traber from their International League club to bolster an overworked bullpen.

• Vernon Wells was activated off the 15-day DL, returning to the Blue Jays’ lineup after missing 26 games with a strained left hamstring.

Outfielder Kevin Mench was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse to make room for Wells.

• The Reds activated right-hander Aaron Harang from the 15-day DL and recalled catcher Ryan Hanigan from Triple-A Louisville.

• Mariners utility man Willie Bloomquist was placed on the 15-day DL and could miss the rest of the season after injuring his hamstring running out a ground ball a night earlier.

Seattle recalled infielder Tug Hulett from Triple-A Tacoma to take Bloomquist’s roster spot.

• Red Sox knuckleballer Tim Wakefield will miss at least two starts and go on the DL because of a stiff right shoulder.

• Royals right-hander Zack Greinke decided to drop his appeal of a five-game suspension, which he has begun serving.
