And now for the quote of the day in the NFL, one you would never hear at Dove Valley: “I definitely want to be in there, but Plaxico Burress has to take care of Plaxico Burress.”
Well, of course. If not, Plaxico Burress might not be able to take care of Plaxico Burress’ family.
Reading that quote has to make you wonder about the state of the Super Bowl champion Giants these days. The Broncos? They may not be playing in any Super Bowls in the foreseeable future, but even their harshest critics have to give them this: They do things the right way.
There are no me-me guys in the Broncos’ locker room, not after Javon Walker was shown the door after the 2007 season. The Broncos have talent issues here and there, but Mike Shanahan has done a good job of creating chemistry on and off the field.
Could you imagine Champ Bailey, who has been nursing a sore hamstring, firing off a “I definitely want to be in there, but Champ Bailey has to take care of Champ Bailey”? Not a chance.
I’m not convinced the Broncos are going to be a good team. They did, after all, allow 409 points last season. But they’re a good bunch of guys.
Unlike some recent Broncos teams, there’s a certain selflessness, a certain sense of unity in this team. I’m not sure how much it’s going to be reflected in the standings, but it has to count for something.
