ST. PAUL, Minn.—Several blocks surrounding the Xcel Energy Center will be closed to traffic during the week of the Republican National Convention.
The St. Paul Police Department announced the plan Monday and says it provides top security while allowing affected businesses to remain open during the event.
The restricted blocks are southwest of St. Peter Street and northwest of Chestnut Street.
Assistant Police Chief Matt Bostrom says pedestrians will be able to get very close to the Xcel Energy Center without having to show credentials.
However, bicycles and motor vehicles will be turned away unless they have been cleared ahead of time and go through a screening process.
City Engineer John Maczko (MAK-zo) says residents should expect delays during the convention, but he emphasizes that most downtown streets will remain open.
