A driver and passenger that fled a minor accident died when the speeding truck they were in crashed into a steel pole at a high speed, police said.
The incident unfolded early this morning on East Colfax Avenue, Aurora Police said in a press release.
Police received a call at about 1:20 a.m. on a minor hit and run accident in the 9500 block of East Colfax Avenue. A short time later a patrol officer spotted a White Ford F450 truck eastbound on Colfax Avenue without lights on and speeding at about 70 mph in a 35 mph zone.
A description of the vehicle in the hit and run matched the speeding Ford F450, police said.
The officer pursued the Ford but lost it.
The speeding truck ran off of Colfax just east of Moline Street and hit a pole on the 11500 block of East Colfax Avenue, police said.
The driver died at the scene and a passenger in the truck died at University Hospital.
Neither wore a seat belt and the driver was partially ejected from the truck.
An investigation is ongoing.
The names of the people involved were not released.
