CNN will open mini-bureaus in 10 cities including Denver, in an effort to double its domestic newsgathering presence. The move, due this fall, is not expected to alter the overall number of CNN staff.

Mini-bureaus, with few people and using portable technology, will be opened in Denver, Columbus, Ohio; Houston; Las Vegas; Minneapolis, Minn.; Orlando, Fla.; Philadelphia; Phoenix; Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; and Seattle.

“CNN’s rapid adoption of new technology over the years put us in the enviable position to be able to expand at a time when others are cutting back,” according to Nancy Lane, CNN newsgathering boss CNN already has bureaus in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.

The mini-bureaus will produce investigative stories along with covering breaking news for both TV and Internet. Some of the reporters may be based inside CNN-affiliated stations.
