The Dolphins cut kicker Jay Feely on Tuesday, one season after he set the team’s single-season record for field-goal percentage.

Feely’s release clears the way for undrafted rookie Dan Carpenter to take over as the starting kicker. Carpenter made field goals of 41 and 49 yards in Miami’s 17-6 loss to Tampa Bay on Saturday.

“The decision was based purely on numbers, on performance and Carpenter has outperformed him right now. That’s the bottom line,” coach Tony Sparano said.

Feely, 32, missed the preseason opener and practice last week because of a groin strain. He made 21-of-23 field goals last season.

Carpenter converted 75-of-103 field goals, and 182-of-188 extra points during his college career at Montana.

Burress takes field in pads

Receiver Plaxico Burress took the field in pads for the first time since the Giants opened training camp late last month.

Burress, who has been bothered by a troublesome right ankle, jogged a few pass routes during individual drills and lined up with the starters as they walked through plays in the evening workout. He did not run any patterns full speed, but he did catch a couple of passes from Eli Manning.

“It’s like riding a bicycle — it’s like I never left,” said Burress, who did not participate in 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 drills.

Colts lose Coe for season

Colts defensive back Michael Coe will be placed on injured reserve and will miss the rest of the season after having surgery on his left knee last week.

Cardinals’ top draft pick hurt

Rookie cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, the Cardinals’ top draft pick, was taken off the practice field on a cart after injuring his right ankle. An immediate prognosis was not available.

Browns nursing injuries

Browns Pro Bowl receiver Braylon Edwards was home resting his stitched-up right foot, and the guy who put him there said he’s in good spirits.

“He was cheering me up more than I was able to cheer him up,” said receiver Donte Stallworth, who inadvertently stepped on Edwards’ heel Saturday at the end of practice.

Stallworth’s cleat cut Edwards’ heel — he was wearing socks but no shoes — as they did some light running. Edwards spent a night in the Cleveland Clinic after receiving an unspecified number of stitches.

“It wasn’t too pretty a moment,” Stallworth said. “He’s a tough dude, because I would’ve passed out, woke up and passed out again probably a couple more times.”
