Colorado State’s latest practice injury came at the one position where the Rams can least afford to lose a potential starter.

Cornerback Nick Oppenneer, the former Columbine quarterback who is a walkon transfer, left practice this morning with an ankle injury. There was no immediate word on the severity or how long he will miss practice.

In related bad news for the Rams at the already-thin position, redshirt freshman Elijah-Blu Smith still can’t put much weight on the foot he broke in spring ball. He is unlikely to be available for the start of the season.

Scott Zick, a Fort Hays State transfer who played for Fort Collins High School, is getting a look with the first unit along with redshirt freshman Ivory Herd. The Rams will scrimmage for at least 20 plays in Wednesday morning’s practice.

Suspension update. Cornerback DeAngelo Wilkinson was the only individual injured in an incident at a Fort Collins nightclub early Aug. 3 when four men were ticketed. Wilkinson, who remains on indefinite suspension, has a Sept. 3 court date on two misdemeanor assault tickets and a charge for underage possession of alcoholic beverages.

Fort Collins police spokesperson Rita Davis said she did not know the extent of the injuries. Starting linebacker Ricky Brewer was also ticketed for underage possession, according Davis. Brewer said Monday he couldn’t discuss the matter other than it was an “unfortunate incident.”
