A 59-year-old man died last night after he drove off a bridge and landed upside down on a pipe spanning an irrigation canal in Boulder County, authorities say.
Michael Nitzel, of Longmont, was taken to Longmont United Hospital following the 7:10 p.m. accident at 14175 N. 115th St., said Trooper Ryan Sullivan of the Colorado State Patrol.
Nitzel was driving a tan 1994 Mazda B3000 southbound on North 115th Street when he drove off the right side of the road, struck a sign, two metal fence posts, and a guardrail, Sullivan said.
The car landed on a natural gas pipeline that spanned the irrigation canal, he said.
Nitzel was not wearing a seat belt. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
