“Uh-oh, the old guys are out!”

So said Jay Cutler when he spotted Rod Smith on the sideline Wednesday.

For the record, Smith isn’t old. At 38, he’s just old in football years.

Smith stopped by Dove Valley to watch the Broncos and Cowboys practice. And, as could be expected, he hung out with some Broncos receivers offering them tips.

Eddie Royal, for instance.

“Even though Eddie is a drafted guy, I still work with him,” Smith said.

Even though he’s a drafted guy.

Smith, an undrafted free agent who went on to become the most prolific pass receiver in franchise history, has a soft spot in his heart for his fellow undraftees.

Glenn Martinez, Selvin Young, Andre Hall, Anthony Alridge. Those are Smith’s boys. Those are the ones who consider him their patron saint.

“I’m partial to those guys,” Smith said. “They’re guys who get their chance, grind it out and make this football team. I’m an example to those guys. I don’t have to be on the field to have an influence on them.”
