At 61, Wade Phillips still is hoping to be appreciated as an NFL head coach.
“That’s what I’m trying to do now,” Phillips said. “I think I’m known as a defensive coordinator, but I’ve got a pretty good record as a head coach, and I think it will get better.”
Pretty good? Phillips is 61-42 as a head coach, putting his winning percentage at .592. Mike Shanahan’s winning percentage, by the way, is .605.
True, Phillips is winless in four playoff games, but two were the result of botched calls by the officials, including the infamous Music City Miracle at Nashville.
Phillips is a classic victim of his own talents. He is arguably the greatest defensive coordinator of his generation. Unfortunately and unfairly, that got him stereotyped as a great defensive coordinator. As opposed to a quality head coach.
He was fired in Denver after two seasons. Then it was on to Buffalo, where he finished 10-6 and 11-5, only to be let go after an 8-8 season. Then, just when it looked like he wouldn’t get another chance, he got a lifeline from the Cowboys.
His first season ended in disappointment, a one-and-done in the playoffs after a 13-3 regular season. He’ll get back to the postseason this year. If there’s any justice, he’ll make something happen once he does.
