A $1.4 million lighting project in tunnels on Interstate 70 near Idaho Springs will start Monday.
The night-time project will include removal of existing lighting and the installation of new conduits, lighting, fixtures, control equipment and guardrails, among other work.
The eastbound and westbound lanes of the “Twin Tunnels” will be reduced to one lane from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday, the Colorado Department of Transportation said in a press release.
On Sundays, starting Aug. 24, work will run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Speeds through the tunnels will be reduced to 45 mph, and vehicles wider than 11 feet will be restricted.
The project will run through November and then halt for the winter. It will resume in the spring and should be completed in June 2009.
CDOT engineers say that when the project is completed, it should improve traffic flow in the area.
DKS Enterprises Inc. of Brighton is the contractor.
