BOULDER, Colo.—Volunteers concerned about hungry bears venturing into Boulder as hibernation season nears plucked fresh fruit from residents’ trees Saturday to cut down on food that might lure bears to people’s homes.

Billie Gutgsell organized the event and works for Bear Smart Campaign and WildEarth Guardians.

Gutgsell and about a half dozen volunteers Saturday picked mostly apples, which will be shipped to the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg to feed about 48 rescued bears.

The Division of Wildlife tags and relocates bears that break into homes or rummage through garbage. If a tagged bear returns to the city and causes problems again, it is considered a risk to people and is killed.
