The University of Denver women’s soccer team capitalized on its first scoring opportunity Sunday when Mariah Johnston blasted a free kick from about 20 yards past Colorado goalkeeper Kirstin Radlinski, and the Pioneers (2-0-0) made the goal stand for a 1-0 victory over the Buffaloes (0-1-1) in Boulder.

The Buffs outshot the Pioneers 22-7, and had nine shots on goal to DU’s four, but DU goalie Mackenzie Snyder let nothing past her. It was the first win for DU over CU since 2001, a span of seven games that included one tie.

• Northern Colorado freshman Ariel Cook scored five minutes into overtime, giving the UNC women’s team (1-1-0) a 2-1 victory over Air Force (0-1-0) in Greeley.

Jessica Zimmerman scored UNC’s first goal, during the sixth minute. The Falcons’ Megan Eiselle scored the equalizer on a header off a corner kick by Rachael Emory in the 77th minute.
