FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Tom Brady said he will be ready for the Patriots opener even if a foot injury keeps him from taking a snap during the preseason.
Last season’s NFL MVP sat out the first three games and said he plans to tell coach Bill Belichick he’s “feeling great” in hopes of playing in Thursday night’s final exhibition game at the Giants.
“I’m hoping I’m always out there,” Brady said Monday, “and if I don’t play, I’ll be ready for Kansas City.”
The cause of Brady’s right foot injury hasn’t been disclosed, but he did everything the other quarterbacks did during the 15 minutes of practice open to the media Monday.
Footnotes.
Texans receiver Harry Williams probably won’t play football again after injuring his neck and spine in Friday’s preseason game against the Cowboys. Dr. Walter Lowe said Williams is expected to walk again after surgery Sunday in Dallas to fuse and stabilize the cervical spine levels C-2 through C-4, but the severity of the injury makes it “highly unlikely that Harry will return to football.”
• Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, who underwent surgery July 14 to have an infected bursa sac removed from his left knee, might be activated today, although the two-time NFL MVP is not expected to play Thursday night against the Bengals.
• Former University of Colorado receiver-kick returner Jeremy Bloom was released by the Steelers.
• The Chiefs signed kicker Jay Feely, who converted 21-of-23 field goals last season for the Dolphins.
• In an effort to replace injured defensive end Osi Umenyiora, the Giants moved Mathias Kiwanuka back to end from his strongside linebacker spot. The team also has contacted the representative for Michael Strahan to gauge his interest in returning for a 16th season.
• Dolphins coach Tony Sparano named Chad Pennington the starting quarterback for the Sept. 7 season opener against the Jets.
• Browns quarterback Derek Anderson (concussion) wasn’t cleared to return to practice, so Brady Quinn likely will start his second straight game Thursday night in the preseason finale against the Bears.
• Raiders safety Jarrod Cooper was waived and said he intends to retire. Also waived were linebacker Grant Irons and defensive end Greg Spires.
• Panthers receiver Jason Carter will miss the entire season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
• Frank Cornish IV, an offensive lineman on two of the Cowboys’ Super Bowl champion teams in the 1990s, died of heart disease over the weekend at age 40.
Meanwhile, Terence Newman participated in practice for the first time in four weeks, an indication that the Pro Bowl cornerback could be ready to play in the season opener. The Associated Press
