A 22-year-old man who was hit by a train early Saturday in Fort Collins was identified today as Gordon Todd-Stearns.
Rita Davis, spokesperson for the Fort Collins Police Department, said that police have not been able to interview Todd-Stearns about why he was lying on the tracks.
The accident happened about 6:02 a.m. Saturday on the railroad tracks west of Creekside Park.
Todd-Stearns, who is not a CSU student, was hospitalized at the Medical Center of the Rockies after he was hit by the northbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe train.
The train conductor spotted a person on the tracks and hit the train’s emergency brakes, but the train, which was traveling at 10 to 15 mph, couldn’t stop.
Todd-Stearns was dragged about 230 feet. He was taken by ambulance to Poudre Valley Hospital before being moved to the Medical Center of the Rockies.
The accident is being jointly investigated by the Fort Collins Police Department Police Services CRASH team and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Police.
