LINCOLN, Neb.—A Nebraska-based power wholesaler has agreed to pay $51 million for a nearly 24 percent stake in a coal-power plant in Wyoming.

The Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska will receive 20 megawatts of power each year from Black Hills Corp.’s Wygen I plant near Gillette, Wyo., as part of the deal.

The agency buys power wholesale on behalf of 65 communities in Nebraska, Colorado, Iowa and Wyoming. Executive Director J. Gary Stauffer says owning part of the plant will help ensure a steady supply of competitively priced energy.

Black Hills is based in Rapid City, S.D., and provides power to 750,000 customers in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming.

The deal is expected to close by the end of the year.
