Every morning and evening during convention week in Denver, a group of antiwar activists is setting up tables at Civic Center park and serving free meals.

Food Not Bombs is serving about 500 meals every breakfast and dinner to anyone who shows up, said Sarah Bardwell with the group.

“It’s all about keeping food from going into the trash,” she said. “Also, it’s about feeding people. Food is a life force. People are hungry and stressed. This gives them a needed little pick-me-up.”

Food Not Bombs’ website says that it is an all-volunteer nonviolent group seeking social change.

On Tuesday in Civic Center Park, dozens of people — protesters and park regulars — stood in line for a meal of vegan spaghetti, steamed vegetables and spinich salad.

“And coffee, always coffee,” Bardwell said.

Twice a week the group gathers food from grocery stores or food distributors that would otherwise be thrown away and serves it in various locations.
