The Mayberry Fire burning on remote public and private land in northwest Colorado has grown to 27,000 acres, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management said today.

The blaze is burning sagebrush and tall grass on a mix of BLM and private property 32 miles northwest of Craig. About 77 firefighters are working the fire, along with a heavy air tanker, two single-engine air tankers and fire trucks. One residence was threatened and 20 gas wells have been burned over, but the damage to them has not yet been assessed.

The fire was 50 percent contained Tuesday, but officials said they expect full containment on Thursday.

Firefighters in northwestern Colorado have fought 24 fires caused by lightning strikes since Sunday. Most of the fires were less than an acre, and no homes have been damaged or injuries reported.

The Prong Fire 23 miles northwest of Craig has grew to 4,900 acres before it was contained last night.

The Lone Fire cq is 50 percent contained Tuesday after burning 700 acres about 15 miles north of Elk Springs.
