The Southern League is new because it has taken previous Continental programs, reshuffled the Colorado Springs contingent and will have the long-awaited Class 5A debut of 4A power ThunderRidge.
Down from Denver, physical play seems assured in the Springs, Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch and Parker.
Consider Douglas County, the school — the Huskies, 35-6 the past three seasons with a state title and a runner-up finish, have a whopping 43 seniors (including leading rusher Jose Astorga).
And consider Douglas County, the district — all area schools will compete within the same league, a smart move playing to an energetic and interested following.
The Huskies, also semifinalists in 2006, are consensus league favorites who expect to face assorted challengers from all league areas.
In Colorado Springs, Doherty (Dakota Barr), Palmer (Maurice Blackledge) and first-time 5A member Rampart (Kreg Jones) have a mix of speed and experience among returning talent.
Highlands Ranch (Jace Davis), as well as city foes Mountain Vista (Eric Anderson) and respected power ThunderRidge (Chris Nwoke), are establishing what should be riveting rivalries.
In Parker, Chaparral (Jack Harris) will pound it at foes; Ponderosa (Terry Alletto) will spread it out.
