EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon quarterback Nate Costa will be out for the season after surgeons repairing a torn meniscus in his left knee also found a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
The sophomore injured the knee in a noncontact drill in the week before Wednesday’s surgery, which the team had hoped would allow him to play part of the season.
Costa also missed last season with a knee injury.
Justin Roper will start Saturday night for Oregon in its opener against Washington.
Florida State’s Pressley hurt
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State running back Tavares Pressley was carted off the field after injuring his left knee during practice.
A team official said Pressley, a junior-college transfer brought in to challenge starter Antone Smith for playing time, will be re-examined today to determine the severity of the injury.
Coach Bobby Bowden said he did not know whether Pressley will miss any significant time.
Wolfpack loses quarterback
COLUMBIA, S.C. — North Carolina State quarterback Russell Wilson was taken off the field on a stretcher in the second quarter against South Carolina after taking a knee to the head while being sacked. It was announced Wilson had a concussion and was taken to a hospital to be examined.
Wilson, a freshman making his first start, was tackled by Gamecocks defensive end Jordin Lindsey. The side of Wilson’s head hit the knee of South Carolina’s Cliff Matthews, and Wilson’s neck was wrenched sideways. Wilson extended his thumbs upward to the crowd as he was carted off.
Buckeyes safety likely out
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State’s starting strong safety, Kurt Coleman, will likely miss the season opener against Youngstown State because of an ankle injury suffered in practice this week.
Coach Jim Tressel disclosed the injury Thursday. Coleman, a junior, was the Buckeyes’ third-leading tackler a year ago.
“We’ll probably hold him (out),” Tressel said. “You have to think about the long haul.”
Coleman’s likely replacement Saturday will be Jermale Hines.
