VAIL — Eagle County Commissioner Peter Runyon thinks it’s time to tax ski-lift tickets.

Runyon is proposing a statewide use tax on the tickets to help raise revenue for roads, work in the national forests and ski employee housing.

Voters would have to approve the tax.

Runyon says lift tickets were exempted from sales taxes in the 1960s when the ski industry was small. He says the industry is big enough now to afford a use tax.

Runyon says some of the state’s transportation’s needs are tied to the ski industry because many of the resorts are along Interstate 70.

A call left with the trade group Colorado Ski Country USA wasn’t immediately returned Saturday.
