MEEKER — A 971-acre fire near Meeker poses little threat, and firefighters have decided to let portions of it burn, said Mike Cook, a dispatcher with the Rio Blanco Sheriff’s Office.

“It is not going to be too much of an issue because it is starting to rain,” he said Sunday.

The blaze 7 miles northwest of Meeker was among several started by lightning in northwest Colorado last week.

The fire is being allowed to burn as it moves from East Jordan Gulch toward West Jordan Gulch because officials say it will improve wildlife habitat and reduce hazardous fuel.
