ANDERSON, S.C. — Officials say a man survived a hot air balloon’s fall from thousands of feet in the air when the basket got caught in a tree.
Officials say pilot Chuck Walz of Munith, Mich., broke his leg and pelvis Sunday in a crash at a balloon festival in South Carolina.
Anderson Fire Chief Jack Abraham said Walz’s balloon might have been 9,000 feet in the air when it deflated. He said the balloon’s basket was skewered by a tree branch about 10 feet above the ground. Walz fell from the basket to the ground and was conscious when rescuers arrived.
