A motorist was arrested Monday after briefly leading Arapahoe County sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase on Interstate 25.

A deputy was monitoring northbound traffic near the Dry Creek Road exit at about 3:38 p.m. when he saw a newer gray Volkswagen Beetle speed by at about 115 mph, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The deputy put on his lights and sirens and gave chase until he realized the Volkswagen was not going to stop or slow down.

The deputy backed off but kept driving. Motorists indicated the Volkswagen had exited at Arapahoe Road, so the deputy got off there, the release said.

The Volkswagen had hit the median dividing the on and off ramps, and witnesses said the driver ran off. Officials found him in a shopping-center parking lot in the 6900 block of South Clinton Street.

He was identified as Nathan Hurlbirt, 27.

His female passenger had moved the car into a hotel parking lot. No charges will be filed against her.

Hurlbirt was charged with eluding an officer and driving under the influence, the Sheriff’s Office said.
