A street race in Pueblo killed an uninvolved 74-year-old who was steering into the parking lot of a grocery story Tuesday afternoon.

A Chevy Camaro broadsided the man’s Dodge sedan, and he was declared dead at the scene in the 1300 block of East Eighth Street just after 1 p.m. He had not been identified Tuesday night.

The driver of the Camaro, 25-year-old Mitchell Yarbrough of Pueblo, had only minor injuries, Pueblo police said.

A silver car that was racing against Yarbrough got away.

Numerous witnesses saw the two cars racing from blocks away, Capt. Linda Grisham said.

Police are still investigating the speed of the two cars and how the race started.

“Most of the organized street races we’ve seen, they have a lot of other kids standing around watching and egging them on,” Grisham said. “No one saw any of that in this case.”

Yarbrough is in the Pueblo County Jail facing charges of vehicular homicide, reckless driving and engaging in a speed contest.

Anyone with information about the second car can call Pueblo police at 719-553-2404. To remain anonymous and qualify for a reward, call Crime Stoppers at 719-542-7867.
