DENVER—A California tribal leader who was injured in a physical confrontation with a strip club bouncer two days after the Democratic National Convention ended has died.
Gabriel Pico, 41, of Temecula suffered unspecified injuries during the altercation around 2 a.m. Saturday, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. He didn’t have details about the dispute.
Pico was pronounced dead Monday at a Denver hospital, said Michelle Weiss-Samaras, Denver chief deputy coroner.
An autopsy was conducted Wednesday, but coroner’s officials are waiting for results of some medical tests before ruling on a cause of death.
The Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians in Southern California issued a statement Tuesday saying Pico had suffered a heart attack.
Pico was elected in July as a member of the Pechanga Tribal Council. Jacob Mejia, a tribal public affairs official, said Pico was not a delegate to the DNC but was there as a guest to attend some events.
He is survived by three daughters, two sons, one grandson, six siblings, and his mother, the tribal council said.
