In an inevitable sign of the end of summer, the road to the summit of Mount Evans has closed for the season.
The Colorado Department of Transportation announced Thursday that Colorado 5 from Summit Lake to the 14,264-foot peak — the last 5 miles of the road — will be shut to motorized traffic until the spring.
North America’s highest paved road climbs to a parking lot at 14,126 feet. Visitors can hike the last stretch to the top.
The highway sees about 130,000 vehicles a year. Other high-country roads across Colorado remain open for now, including Trail Ridge Road through Rocky Mountain National Park and the highways over Independence Pass and Cottonwood Pass.
