Fog, drizzle and a slight chill greeted commuters and schoolkids this morning as they made their way to work and class.

9News meteorologist Becky Ditchfield said this morning that a cold front moving across the state will bring clouds, drizzle and fog to the metro area before lunch. However, by the afternoon, skies will slowly start to clear making for a partly cloudy evening commute. Highs will be in the lower 60s.

The National Weather Service isn’t as optimistic. It predicts highs in the metro area today will only reach the mid 50s.

Tomorrow we can expect more of what has the been norm lately, the NWS says, a mostly sunny day with highs in the mid 70s and a small chance of rain late in the afternoon.

The normal temperature for Sept. 8 is 80 degrees, NWS records indicate; the record high was set for the day in 1959 at 94 degrees.

It could be worse: On this day in 1962, the earliest first freeze of the season was recorded when temperatures dipped to 31 degrees.
