CENTENNIAL, Colo.—Prosecutors filed charges Wednesday alleging that former Denver Broncos player Billy Jenkins killed a motor scooter driver in a hit-and-run collision.
Jenkins faces charges of vehicular homicide, leaving the scene, driving under the influence and failure to provide insurance.
Conviction on the the vehicular homicide and leaving the scene charges each carries a sentence of four to 12 years in prison. The other charges carry sentences of up to one year each.
Authorities say 51-year-old Tracy Gill died when his scooter was rear-ended on Aug. 28 in the Denver suburb of Aurora. They say Jenkins ran from the scene but then returned.
Jenkins is free on $50,000 bail. He did not have a listed phone number, and his attorney, David Kaplan, did not immediately return a call.
Jenkins was a six-year pro who played for the St. Louis Rams from 1997 through 1999, the year they won the Super Bowl. He played for the Broncos in 2000 and split 2001 between Denver and the Green Bay Packers.
He played for the Buffalo Bills in 2002, his last NFL season.
