ANAHEIM, Calif. — Yankees catcher Ivan Rodriguez and Angels outfielder Torii Hunter were suspended two games each Wednesday for their roles in a bench-clearing scuffle.

Rodriguez took an openhanded swing at Hunter after getting shoved in the back by Hunter, and both players were ejected Monday night. Both were fined, as was Angels pitcher John Lackey.

Dodgers assign Penny to bullpen

SAN DIEGO — The Dodgers activated pitcher Brad Penny from the 15-day disabled list and plan to use their former ace as a reliever. Penny went on the disabled list Aug. 14 because of inflammation in his right shoulder. He is 6-9 with a 6.05 ERA.

Also, Takashi Saito (elbow) threw a simulated game and manager Joe Torre said the Dodgers hope to activate the closer this weekend.

• The Phillies activated outfielder Geoff Jenkins (hip) and placed infielder Andy Tracy on the DL with a broken hand that will cost him the rest of the season.
