Hall of Fame goaltender Patrick Roy, who led the Avalanche to two Stanley Cup championships, will have his No. 33 retired by the Montreal Canadiens on Nov. 22 before the team’s game against the Boston Bruins.
“It’s a great day, it’s a great honor to have the chance to come back with the organization and the family of the Montreal Canadiens,” Roy said of the team owned by Vail resident George Gillett Jr. “I think when you talk about the Canadiens, you have to put the word ‘family’ in front of it.”
Roy, who previously had his number retired by the Avalanche, is the NHL’s only three-time winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy, awarded to the MVP of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
“This is obviously a well-deserved honor for Patrick,” Avs president and former general manager Pierre Lacroix said. “To have number 33 hang from the rafters in Montreal, a place where the game’s greatest goaltender began his career, is truly special. For me, it’s another reminder of the legacy that Patrick has left behind.”
Garrity calling it a career.
Orlando Magic forward Pat Garrity, a former standout at Lewis-Palmer High School in Monument, is retiring from the NBA.
Garrity played 10 pro seasons — nine with the Magic — after spending his rookie year with the Phoenix Suns. He appeared in 513 games for Orlando, second- most in franchise history.
The 32-year-old player from Notre Dame was a free agent after last season.
Garrity averaged 7.3 points in 20 minutes per game for his career.
