If any team should not be providing locker-room material, it’s Notre Dame. But Irish coach Charlie Weis pulled it off for Saturday’s game against Michigan.
It happened in April, but you know the Wolverines are reading it again this week. Speaking to boosters before the Blue-Gold spring game, Weis said his team would make a statement in this year’s opener against San Diego State.
“Then,” Weis said, “we’ll listen to Michigan have all their excuses as they come running in and saying how they have a new coaching staff and there’s changes. To hell with Michigan.”
Backpedaling much better than his defense did during last season’s 3-9 pratfall, Weis modified the statement at Tuesday’s news conference. He said the comment was in respect to the late Michigan coach, Bo Schembechler, who often said, “To hell with Notre Dame.”
“Anyone who is a Michigan fan should know and understand that that comment pays respect to Bo and his mentality versus when playing an opponent. So take it for what it’s worth.”
Take this opening statement for what it’s worth, too: Notre Dame 21, San Diego State 13.
