DENVER—The former U.S. Forest Service employee who started Colorado’s worst wildfire is expected to appear in federal court in Denver on Friday.

Terry Barton has been summoned to testify in a lawsuit brought by insurance companies who covered property losses in the 2002 Hayman fire. The companies are suing the federal government for about $7 million they paid out in claims.

Barton said she accidentally started the fire when she burned a letter in a campground.

She pleaded guilty to both state and federal arson charges in the fire was released from prison earlier this year.
