PUEBLO, Colo.—A big surge in the number of freshmen has helped boost enrollment by 11.3 percent at Colorado State University-Pueblo.

The official count Wednesday was 4,610 students, compared with 4,142 a year ago. A significant factor in the increase is the size of the freshman class—1,033. That’s a 65 percent jump from last year’s count of 407 freshmen.

University officials attribute the increase to several initiatives, including construction on campus, an expanded sports program and changes in recruitment and the admissions process.
