East Carolina is being fined $10,000 by Conference USA after football fans charged the field to celebrate the Pirates’ upset of West Virginia on Sept. 6. Conference USA said Friday the university also is subject to a possible suspension of future hosting privileges. The conference says the school violated a policy that prohibits public access to competition areas until the visiting team and officials are in the locker rooms. Fans ran onto the field following the Pirates’ 24-3 win over the then-No. 8 Mountaineers. The win propelled the Pirates to No. 14 nationally, their first appearance in the top 25 since 1999.
