WEIS TO PUT OFF KNEE SURGERY

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis will wait to decide whether to have surgery after tearing ligaments in his knee when a player crashed into him on the sideline during the game against Michigan on Saturday.

“I don’t see me having surgery in the foreseeable future,” he said Sunday.

Weis said surgery is not needed on his torn medial collateral ligament, saying it has to “tighten up” on its own. He said he could need surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament, but he would wait at least until Notre Dame’s off week in mid-October or until after the season, if he has surgery at all.

Weis was standing at the 50-yard line looking to his right on a punt when Notre Dame defensive end John Ryan, who is 6-feet-5, 264 pounds, was knocked out of bounds by a Michigan blocker and crashed into Weis.

Weis stayed on the ground briefly before being helped up, but used crutches with his leg in a wrap so he could stay on the sideline.

He plans to be on the sideline for Saturday’s game at Michigan State and said he would be more careful. He said he will probably sit more during practices, but doesn’t think that will change much.

“They didn’t hire me for my body, they hired me for my mind,” he said.

BYU BCS bucking.

No disputed penalty. No last-second play to save the game. And no doubts that BYU is making a run at the BCS.

The Cougars made a big impression Saturday by stomping UCLA 59-0, making it clear that they want a chance to become the latest team from a non-BCS conference to bust their way into the Bowl Championship Series.

“If you’re a D-I program and you’re not trying to get to the BCS, what are you doing?” said Max Hall, who tied a school record with seven touchdown passes. “If you’re not setting your goals to try to get to (be) one of the best programs in the country, something’s not right.”

The Cougars (3-0) extended the nation’s longest winning streak to 13 games and moved up four spots Sunday to No. 14 in the AP poll to remain among the non-BCS schools looking for a spot in one of the four big bowls when the season ends.

Late TD lifts Northwestern State.

NATCHITOCHES, La. — John Hundley threw for two touchdowns, including a 17-yard TD pass to Gordon Freeman late in the fourth quarter, and ran for another score to lead Northwestern State (2-1) to a 31-19 win Sunday over Grambling State (1-2).
