Colorado coach Dan Hawkins called Mike Shanahan’s decision to go for a go-ahead two-point conversion Sunday in the Broncos’ victory over San Diego “totally awesome. I thought, ‘I’ve got to call Shanahan because that was money’ — not that they got it, but that they went for it,” Hawkins said Monday. He recalled trying “a lot of funky stuff” while coaching at Willamette (Ore.). “A guy said, ‘How come you never see anybody do that at the big schools?’ ” Hawkins said. “I go, ‘That’s because, if we try it (at the small-college level) and it doesn’t work, you go, “Man, that was a pretty cool idea.” ‘ . . . But if it doesn’t work (at CU), everybody goes, ‘You’re a blipping idiot!’ ” Tom Kensler, The Denver Post
