ASPEN, COLO. — Aspen officials may sign on to the nation’s most ambitious municipal agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Aspen City Council members agreed Monday to join the 2030 Challenge, an agreement by cities to become “carbon-neutral” by 2030. The ultimate goal is for all new buildings to use zero fossil fuel energy.
Aspen would not make a final decision on the 2030 Challenge until officials review how to make historic buildings meet energy efficiency standards.
The city has already adopted the Canary Action Plan, which mandates reduction in greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050.
