SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he would veto the budget California lawmakers sent to him hours earlier because it didn’t meet his demands for reform.
The announcement Tuesday afternoon marked the first time in modern history that a California governor would veto a state spending plan. The Democratic-controlled Legislature has said it is prepared to override a veto.
The budget stalemate has delayed billions of dollars in state funding for schools, medical clinics, day-care centers and state vendors.
Lawmakers finally cobbled together a patchwork spending plan on the 78th day after the start of the fiscal year, passing a $143 billion budget shortly after 2 a.m.
