DURANGO, Colo.—A southwest Colorado technical college and the Durango campus of Pueblo Community College plan to merge amid declining enrollment.
San Juan Basin Technical College outside Cortez and the Pueblo college’s Southwest Center would be combined under a still-undetermined named.
The state Board for Community Colleges and Occupational Education, which oversees community colleges, approved the merger last week. The Legislature would also have to approve.
Enrollment at the Southwest Center has dropped from the equivalent of about 460 full-time students in 2003 to about 300 this year.
Three local school districts provided about a third of the technical college’s outside funding in 1993, but that declined to 7 percent by this year.
