DENVER—One of three men who sparked fears of an assassination plot against Barack Obama has been ordered detained without bail on a weapons charge.

Nathan Dwaine Johnson appeared in U.S. District Court Tuesday on charges of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and possession of methamphetamine. His next hearing is scheduled for Oct. 17.

Johnson, Tharin Robert Gartrell and Shawn Robert Adolf were arrested Aug. 24, a day before the Democratic convention in Denver. Witnesses said the three talked about killing Obama because he’s black.

Prosecutors didn’t charge them with threatening Obama, saying they were on meth at the time and posed no credible threat.
