WASHINGTON — Lax regulation and insufficient airplane maintenance have made sky-diving even more dangerous than it already is, the National Transportation Safety Board said Tuesday.
The board’s remarks came at a hearing into a crash in Sullivan, Mo., two years ago that killed five parachutists and the pilot, while seriously injuring two other parachutists.
The board found that planes that take sky-divers up sometimes have fuel that is insufficient or contaminated, safety belts too weak to hold passengers, or equipment that has not undergone routine maintenance.
