FOOTBALL
Fountain-Fort Fun
The Trojans are 4-0 and loving life. After a Zero Week debut against Ralston Valley that gave credence to the Trojans’ power running attack, see Quinton Lawson and Devyn Harris. Fountain-Fort Carson is off to a 2-0 start in the Pikes Peak League with wins over Rock Canyon and Mitchell, but it gets tougher this week against Pine Creek. The Eagles are 3-0 and have outscored their opponents 108-7, including back-to-back shutouts in Week 2 and Week 3. Kickoff is Friday night at Liberty’s District 20 Stadium at 7 p.m.
For years the debate has raged about which league is the best in the state regardless of classification. Class A 8-man’s Plains League still gets our vote. With five teams in The Denver Post’s top 10 (only four qualify for the playoffs), including the top two, Saturday’s Sedgwick County (No. 5) at Dayspring Christian (No. 2) game looms large.
VOLLEYBALL
499 and counting
Legendary Flagler coach Pam Fagerlund will try again tonight to notch win No. 500. Fellow volleyball gurus Judy Barnett and Diane Ruby were on hand Saturday night in McClave to watch Fagerlund’s Panthers lose in four sets to the Cardinals. The two will again make the trip east on Interstate 70, this time to watch as Flagler (4-1) hosts Byers (2-6).
BOYS GOLF
It seems way too early for this
Let the postseason festivities begin. Boys golfers get things started Monday with five of the 12 regionals teeing it up, six more on Tuesday and finally wrapping it up Wednesday at Lake Valley Golf Club in Longmont with the Class 5A Northern Region. The three state tournaments, including the inaugural 3A tournament, will be in two weeks (Oct. 6-7) at Eisenhower Golf Club at the Air Force Academy (5A), Yampa Valley Golf Course in Craig (4A) and Spring Valley Ranch in Elizabeth (3A).
BOYS SOCCER
Must-see action
Soccer fans should be eagerly awaiting what’s coming to Denver — or Aurora, for that matter — this weekend. It is Regis’ turn to host the 12th annual Jesuit Classic, and the field is fabulous. Rockhurst High of Kansas City, Mo., the top-ranked team in the country by NSCAA/Adidas, and Marquette University High (No. 13) of Milwaukee are in town as well as Washington, D.C.’s Gonzaga College High. Doubleheaders start at 1 p.m. Friday (notably Rockhurst vs. Marquette) and 11 a.m. Saturday.
