Goodman earns Big 12 plaudit

Colorado sophomore place-kicker Aric Goodman was named Big 12 Conference special-teams player of the week on Monday.

Goodman, a former all-Colorado standout at Cherry Creek High School, booted the game-winning, 25-yard field goal in overtime Thursday night in CU’s 17-14 victory over then-21st-ranked West Virginia.

After the game, CU coach Dan Hawkins awarded Goodman a scholarship.

“He was fired up,” Hawkins recalled Monday of Goodman’s reaction.

Goodman was the starting kicker for the University of Wyoming as a freshman before transferring to Colorado last year. He became the second CU player to earn a Big 12 player of the week award this season, joining cornerback Cha’pelle Brown, who earned defensive player of the week honors on Sept. 8.

CU running back Rodney Stewart, who rushed for 166 yards, third most in CU history for a freshman, and helped set up the winning field goal, was beat out for the offensive player of the week award by Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel.

Daniel was 36-of-43 for a career-high 439 yards in the Tigers’ 42-21 win over Buffalo. He set a conference record for consecutive pass completions with 20.

Missouri linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, who had a career-high 20 tackles, earned the defensive award.
